Woman Crush Wednesday : Sevyn Streeter

Songwriters Taking Control of Their Own Voices

It’s hard to imagine that Sevyn Streeter hasn’t released an album yet considering she has been involved in the music industry for such a long time. Coming from girl group to girl group to being one of the go-to-songwriters in the RnB and Hip Hop space, the time is finally here and Sevyn is disrupting the RnB music game.

The female songstress started in the music game at the age of 15 going through two girl groups; TG4 and RichGirl, before signing to Chris Brown’s music label, Atlantic Records in 2012. She released her debut EP ‘Call Me Crazy But…’ in December of 2013 following it up with a second EP ‘Should’ve Been There Part 1′ in 2015 and now her debut album is finally here ‘Girl Disrupted’.

Her previous EPs have been distinctive in their own right that you almost think of them as albums. ‘Call Me Crazy But…’ really showed Sevyn to be more than just a background vocalist. Of course Chris Brown was on hand to lend his voice to one of the tracks of the EP ‘It Won’t Stop’. The EP provides a different type of RnB to what has been out in the last couple of years. Songs like ‘Call Me Crazy’ and ‘Shattered’ really put Sevyn in a different lane for me.

‘Should’ve Been There’ was a different sound to her previous project. Tracks on this were much more autobiographical and were broken up by interludes between the song. Tracks like ‘Don’t Kill The Fun’ which also features Chris Brown and ‘Just Being Honest’ were at the forefront of Sevyn’s voice.

And now her debut album ‘Girl Disrupted’ is telling a more darker truth – her struggle with depressions and being in the industry.

Speaking on this, Sevyn says “I dedicated my life to this work and this art, and I don’t feel like it’s having the opportunity to be heard. It was almost like I had a muzzle over my mouth. Sometimes I would place it there myself; sometimes I would allow other people to place it there.”

However, this is no longer the case. Sevyn is speaking her truth and has called upon her friends in the industry including; Jeremih, Khalifa and Ty Dolla $ign, Dej Loaf, August Alsina and rising New York rapper, Dave East who all appear as features on the album.

Sevyn’s journey in the music industry has certainly been a long and grueling on but she is clearly here to stay and making sure everybody knows that she is not going anywhere, which is why, we have named her today’s #WCW!
