Love movies? We do too, so we can’t help but be excited by Carphone Warehouse’s Massive Movie Calendar showcasing one movie for every single day of the year.
We’ve combed through their choices (chosen based on whether they have a link to a moment in history) and picked out some of the best movies every woman should watch (almost all pass the Bechdel test too!).
Read on for our top ten picks in no particular order:
- When Harry Met Sally (1989)
Can men and women ever be just friends? Harry and Sally try to answer the question in this iconic romantic comedy. If you’re watching it for the first time, you might find the themes familiar; the rom-com led the way in the 1990s, spurning hundreds of similar movies over the years.
2. Million Dollar Baby (2004)
Celebrate women’s boxing with this touching sport drama about Maggie Fitzgerald and her boxing trainer Frankie. Join Maggie in her journey to professional boxing, where she proves to us all that you can conquer any challenge with “nothing but guts” and a bit of perseverance.
3. Erin Brockovich (2000)
Smart, determined, feisty, undeterred. There’s no easy way to describe the awe-inspiring Erin Brockovich, but this “probably 98% accurate” movie goes a long way to helping us understand her. Watch Brockovich tirelessly fight for justice for the town of Hinkley, California in this true story dramatisation.
4. Alien (1979)
Damsel in distress? No thank you. When Ellen Ripley finds herself facing a highly aggressive alien, she gets right into alien-fighting mode and saves others while battling that strange-headed alien creature. The sole survivor of the attack, Ripley cemented herself as one of the genre’s most iconic characters.
5. The Color Purple (1985)
A movie centred around some of the strongest female characters in movie history has to make it into our top 10! The Color Purple lets us join Celie Harris in her journey of self-exploration. Explore themes of survival, sexuality and companionship in this tender telling of life as a woman in rural 1930s Georgia.
6. Mean Girls (2004)
The movie that tried to make ‘Fetch’ happen, this high school comedy has made such a cultural impact that October 3rd is (un)officially Mean Girls Day. Join Cady Heron as she faces off against The Plastics in this Tina-Fey-penned flick.
7. Suffragette (2015)
It’s pretty common knowledge that women had to fight tooth and nail to gain the right to vote. But, how much do you know about the movement, and how it all started? Discover the story of the suffragettes and the determined women that led the charge in this historical drama.
8. Black Swan (2010)
Physically challenging, competitive and mentally draining. If you’ve never used these words to describe the elegant dance that is ballet, this movie might have you quickly changing your mind. Watch perfectionist Nina Sayers push herself to the extremes to compete for the role of the Black Swan.
9. Gone Girl (2014)
Empowering or insulting to women? Answer the question for yourself with this psychological thriller about the mysterious disappearance of Amy Dunne. Watch the movie to try to piece together what really happened, but be warned: we’re pretty sure no two people will interpret the events the same.
10. A Quiet Passion (2016)
Discover one of America’s most important poets as we follow the life and challenges of Emily Dickinson. This beautiful biographical film shows the reclusive yet spirited poet from childhood onwards. Watch it again if you don’t find yourself falling in love with the fiercely independent Emily.
So, there you have it. Ten amazing movies we think every woman should see.
