For this month’s first #MovieMonday we are talking about the latest action comedy CHiPs, but will it be all laughs and smiles or just one big joke?
Amor Rating: 2/5
California’s Highway Patrol in Los Angeles has two new recruits; Jon Baker, a former motorbike rider hoping to transform his life and failing marriage, and Frank ‘Ponch’ Poncherello, an arrogant undercover FBI agent. Together this rookie and desensitised officer form the force’s latest motorcycle policing duo. While they aren’t quite the dream team, with clashing personalities and attitudes, the pair are tasked with keeping the highways safe and secure.
As Jon begins to learn more about his partner in crime, he soon realises that Frank is in fact working undercover investigating a multi-million dollar heist. With the FBI suspecting an inside job, the dynamic duo must find out who’s behind LA’s latest robberies and before they drive one another completely insane.
With their rookie partnership putting the mission at stake, will they be able to come together and use Jon’s world-class biking skills and Ponch’s street savvy approach to put the bad guys behind bars?
With several cop action comedies already being out there, it’s always hard to come up with something new and original. Sadly, CHiPs fails to do exactly this.
To start, it’s weak storyline and lack of seriously funny jokes has left critics somewhat disappointed. The film’s attempt to crack a joke with the stereotypical ingredients for a laddish comedy; including an overload of sexual references, involvement of drugs and consistent foul language, is almost awkward and there is just something missing.
While fans of the original TV series may have high hopes for this film, it seems safe to say that this isn’t one worth running to the cinema for.
